Gleed flew Hurricanes in France. 87 Squadron suffered significant casualties during the first week of the battle.Gleed proved himself an exceptional pilot.
During the Battle of Britain, 87 Squadron was part of 10 Group, based at Church Fenton and later Exeter. Gleed was promoted to squadron leader and took command of 87 Squadron at RAF Charmy Down. Gleed later went on to command 244 Wing in the Tunisian Campaign. Gleed reported missing in action 16 April 1943, the likely victim of Ernst-Wilhelm Reinert.
